The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to teach participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course content and activities prepare participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drownings and injuries.
Upon completion of the course, participants will each receive an American Red Cross Universal Certificate; indicating Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED , which is valid for 2 years.
Course prerequisites: To be eligible for the Lifeguarding course, the participant must be 15 years of age on or before the final scheduled session of the course. Participants are also required to successfully complete a skills test on the first day to be able to complete the course.
- Swim for 300 yards continuously using front crawl, face in the water, while breathing to the front or side, and modified breast stroke only. Goggles may be used for the 300 yard swim.
- Tread water for 2 minutes using your legs only.
- Swim a distance of 60 feet (20 yards), dive underwater to retrieve a 10 pound diving brick, return to the surface and kicking on your back return to the starting wall holding the brick with both hands. Set the brick onto the deck and exit the pool without assistance within one minute twenty seconds. Goggles may not be used for the timed event.

Lifeguarding Review Course
This course is open to previously certified American Red Cross lifeguards whose certification is soon to expire or expired however not longer than 4 months. Complete understanding of all lifeguard materials and skills is necessary prior to the beginning of this course.
